Designing for Assembly and Disassembly

This chapter addressed the twin issues of product assembly and disassembly. It discussed the importance of both processes and presented an overview of several design methods to facilitate each process. Contrary to widespread opinion, one process is not always the exact opposite of the other. In other words, the assembly process may not be the exact opposite of disassembly, and vice versa, due to the presence of several product and process parameters that might hamper the ease with which either process is performed. The designer should always consider the pros and cons of both assembly and disassembly simultaneously when considering specific design options.
