Modernism to pre-war luxury and power: 1900s to 1945

The first half of the twentieth century was a time of political and economic upheaval across much of Europe and also in Asia. At the end of World War I, Germany signed the Treaty of Versailles, which resulted in the loss of a significant part of its territory, limited the size of the German army, and imposed massive reparations. It was not until 1933, when Adolf Hitler (1889–1945) became the leader of Germany and democracy was abolished in favor of Fascism, that a massive rearming process took place.
