Getting clean audio into your NLE can be as easy as plugging in a drive. But things can go wrong: be ready to check and fix damage before you edit.

SMPTE timecode might not be necessary—generations of great Hollywood films were made without it. But it’s handy for keeping track of elements … and if you’re producing for broadcast, timecode is important.

Optical film and digital video run at different frame rates … but even after you’ve made the obvious adjustment, a few extra steps might be needed for long-term sync.
