MUSIC RIGHTS

All music is subject to copyright protection unless it is in the public domain (see the next section). Unless you only intend to show your film in a classroom, or hire a composer to write original music, it is absolutely necessary to clear the music you intend to use in your film. Your film cannot be exhibited publically (including the Internet) without a specific grant to do so. This applies to festivals as well (see below).

Clearance means determining who owns the copyright to a piece of music and negotiating a license to use that material for exhibition and distribution in specific territories and media in exchange for the payment of a fee to the copyright owner. (See below for details.) ...
