You’ve got to be very, very careful when cutting the negative; most students aren’t that careful, not even with their own material. Everybody I know hired a negative cutter. To find a negative cutter, you call other students, see who they use, and find a good price. Prices do vary greatly, anywhere from $4 a cut to $1.50 a cut; it makes a big difference. There were 198 edits in Truman. That’s a lot of cuts for a 10-minute film.
