Many key aspects of film and television production are constant. Telling a story visually is juxtaposing one image with another and then next to another, the sum of which makes a narrative, documentary, animation or experimental piece. However one captures the image, manipulates it editorially, or projects it for an audience, the basic steps of visual storytelling have been the same for the hundred years since film was invented.

But technology is an integral part of film and television production. Cameras, lenses, lights, editing machines, and even film stocks have evolved with the demands of this popular medium.
