Chapter 10. Building Upon the Known Pieces

10.1. Top-Level Essential Model

Now that we have modeled the known pieces of the system, we can start to extend the model, upward and downward. In this way, we can complete the requirements and architecture models and specify the entire system.

The Level 1 diagram of the essential model, shown in Figure 10.1, reflects the basic functions required of the system: storing, sampling, mixing, stabilizing, and testing the specimens and reagents, and analyzing the results of the tests. In addition, the system must select the expected pollutants and their reagents, respond to operator requests, read the data included with each specimen, remove the analyzed specimens, and store the processing parameters.
