For surge vessels it is generally more important to allow levels to “float” in order to minimize flow rate variations. The approach shown in this module uses a gain that is proportional to the absolute value of the error; this is effectively a nonlinear controller, where the control action is a function of the square of the error. Nonlinear control was shown to lead to reduced control action compared with simple P-only control.
