2.3 SET OPERATIONS
Most problems of interest in probability involve operations on events. The two basic set operations are union and intersection.
Definition: Union The union of two sets is the set of all elements in A or B or both:
(2.5)
The sum notation A+B is sometimes used to denote the union operation.
Definition: Intersection The intersection of two sets is the set of elements common to A and B:
(2.6)
The product notation AB is sometimes used to denote the intersection operation.
Example 2.11. If A = {1, 2, 3} and B = {3, 4}, then and . If and , then and . If , A = (a, b), and B
