Inactive Elements

There are two important terms when it comes to resource management—offline and inactive. An offline clip occurs when source media is not found when you open a session. When that happens, a clip will appear on a track, but that clip will be empty, with the clip name in italics. Inactive elements, on the other hand, are processes that are somehow disabled (either as a result of not having the appropriate plug-in installed on a system or deliberately by the Pro Tools user).

Although an offline clip won’t save too much in the way of CPU resources, being able to use inactive tracks and plug-ins will really help you out in a pinch. There are a few good reasons ...
