Using Effects

Many software applications use plug-ins—bits of programming designed to operate within a host program. With word processors, plug-ins can be editing tools or macros; graphics applications have visual-effect plug-ins; and so on. Pro Tools is no exception, and Pro Tools plug-ins include all manner of effects processors and virtual instruments. Because they’re software (and not hardware), they have great flexibility and can even save you money and rack space in your project studio!

In a Pro Tools 10 system, plug-ins fall into two categories: file-based plug-ins (called AudioSuite) and real-time plug-ins. First, let’s tackle AudioSuite.
