Chapter 2. Microsoft Sync Framework Metadata

The Microsoft Sync Framework provides a comprehensive synchronization platform that enables offline and collaboration for applications, stores, and devices without agreeing on the following:

  • Type of data to be synchronized

  • Type of data store

  • Transfer protocols

  • Network topology such as peer-to-peer or hub-and-spoke

Instead, the Sync Framework agrees only on a common metadata model that enables the Sync Framework to do the following:

  • Achieve interoperability of synchronization

  • Reduce the amount of information that has to be sent between two data stores participating in synchronization

  • Be independent of any network topology, data type, data store, or transfer protocol
