Solution Framework Overview
The SharePoint family of products, including SharePoint Foundation and Server, use the solution framework to install custom enhancements into a SharePoint environment. This replaces the other installer technologies used in the Windows environment such as MSI files and ClickOnce. The solution framework allows custom components to be deployed, activated, and updated in a controlled manner that is designed to keep the SharePoint server farm stable. Solution packages can also contain resource files for a consistent approach to localizing your custom components.
