Planning for Monitoring

To effectively govern a SharePoint portal, it is necessary to understand how it is being used. Chapter 7 discusses the monitoring tools that are available within SharePoint. When planning a new service in your farm, think about the following:

  • What needs to be monitored? These may include performance counters, event logs, SharePoint logs, disk files, database sizes, and so on.
  • Monitor usage and capacity continuously. Establish a baseline and monitor the growth of usage, computing resources, and storage volume consumed by the service.
  • What level of usage is expected? If the service is more or less successful than expected, how will the governance team know?
