Planning for Maintenance

Maintaining a portal service is similar in many respects to maintaining any IT system.

The first and most important consideration is protecting the organization's data. This means creating a backup schedule and testing restoration procedures frequently. Most of SharePoint's built-in services store their data within SharePoint's content databases. The principal exception is the search feature. SharePoint Search uses additional databases and index files that are not part of the content databases in SharePoint. While it is usually possible to re-create this information by recrawling the content source, restoring the file from a backup is often more time and cost effective.
