Planning for Decommissioning

When a service is no longer needed, a plan should be created for decommissioning the service. Normally, this detailed planning isn't done until the service has been identified for removal. During the initial implementation of the service, there are a few items that need to be considered and documented to support the possible need to decommission the service later:

  • Where is all of the data for the service stored? Is it only in SharePoint's content databases or are there other databases and files involved?
  • How can the service's data be archived or dumped into another form for later use? For example, does it make sense to dump the data to a series of Excel spreadsheets or some other type of file?
