You can see there are two ways to approach monitoring SharePoint: through the general Windows tools like Event Viewer in Server Manager or monitoring in SharePoint Central Administration. Which is better? I think of SharePoint as the mind: it contains the information generated by users and developers. The farm hardware, network, and software is the body: it sustains and holds the SharePoint application. If the body is sound, the mind will be, too.
