Backup Using SQL Server

The main limitation with using SQL Server as your only backup method is you can’t use SQL Server tools (or Data Protection Manager) to back up a service application. Use SQL Server to back up content databases, but note that you will have to manually rebuild the rest of your farm, which is not a good option if users are waiting. If you are running SQL Server Enterprise, Microsoft strongly recommends that you use backup compression.
