The Managed Metadata Service

Up to now, this chapter has introduced concepts that already exist in SharePoint 2007 (with a few exceptions). Content types, site columns, and the publishing features operate in SharePoint 2010 pretty much the way they do in the previous version of SharePoint. This section of the chapter introduces the Managed Metadata Service, which many associate with tagging and taxonomy, but is essentially the central hub for managing metadata across site collections and applications in a SharePoint 2010 farm (and potentially across farms, using the service and service proxy components).
