Chapter 8. Oracle Cluster File System (OCFS)

In this chapter, we discuss the Oracle Cluster File System (OCFS), which is an open source cluster file system provided by Oracle for use with Linux, Windows, and, most recently, Solaris. In the following chapter, we will discuss ASM, which provides similar functionality, but also includes volume management capabilities, such as disk balancing and redundancy.

If you are using the Oracle Database 10g Standard Edition with the RAC option, then you are contractually obligated to use ASM for datafile storage. However, you may still wish to use OCFS version 2 to store shared Oracle home directories or other nondatabase files, as ASM cannot be used for this purpose.
