Indexes
An index is an optional database object that is primarily used to increase performance. These objects are defined on a table and one or more columns. A database index functions similarly to an index in the back of a book. A book index associates the information of interest with a page number. When you're locating information in a book, it's usually much faster to inspect the index first, determine the page number, and then turn to the desired page. If there were no index, you would have to inspect every page of the book to find information.
