Chapter 6. Hardware

In this chapter, we will consider the technology decisions to be made in terms of the hardware required for a RAC cluster. The question of hardware is often neglected by DBAs; however, for a well-tuned application, the potential performance improvements offered by the latest hardware running Linux can often be orders of magnitude greater than those achievable by upgrades or software tuning in an existing environment.

To compare systems, we can use the independently audited results of TPC-C benchmarks, the fundamentals of which have already been discussed in Chapter 5. At the time of this writing, the highest-ranking TPC-C result, submitted with Oracle 10g RAC on Linux in August 2003, was 1,184,893 tpmC with a price of US$5.52/tpmC. ...
