Users’ Privacy Risk

Although social-network users experience the benefits of their online presence, they are often unable to estimate the risks to their privacy imposed by their information-sharing activities. Even sophisticated users, who value privacy, appear to be willing to compromise their privacy in order to improve their digital presence in the virtual world. Users know that loss of control over their personal information poses a long-term threat, but they cannot assess the overall and long-term risk accurately enough to compare it to the short-term gain.
