Types of Privacy Disclosure

When studying privacy, it is important to define a failure to preserve privacy. A privacy breach occurs when a piece of sensitive information about an individual is disclosed to an adversary, someone whose goal is to access information that they are not authorized to access. Traditionally, two types of privacy breaches have been studied: identity disclosure and attribute disclosure. We discuss these two types in the context of social networks. We also present two additional disclosure types, specific to network data: social link disclosure and affiliation link disclosure.
