Chapter 12

Unclear Objectives

Abstract

Projects fail for two main reasons: They were either ill-conceived or poorly executed. In either case, the root cause rests on a lack of well-defined objectives. Without objectives, we can’t know whether the project is defined to achieve a desired purpose. Likewise, without objectives we can’t know whether a project was successful or when we can call it done. We recommend building “SMART” objectives defined by multidisciplinary teams to improve the likelihood of PrD’s success. A lack of good objectives nearly guarantees a poor outcome, making the art of objective crafting a crucial skill to master.
