In the wonderful book The Macintosh Way, Guy Kawasaki talks about “working with the mothership.” In his case, he was talking about how, as a third-party software developer, you deal with a company like Apple that’s so damn big you can’t get away from it. That’s why I lumped the guilds, unions, and states together in this chapter. They’re too big to ignore, and you can’t treat them in the same way as you can the other entities that you’ll be doing business with.
