Interlaced and Progressive Scan Video

One important difference between television and computer monitors lies in how they display frames of video. Television monitors display interlaced video, whereas computer monitors use a progressive scan.

In a progressive scan, the horizontal lines of each frame are displayed from the top of the screen to the bottom in a single pass.

Interlaced video divides each frame into two fields. Each field includes every other horizontal line (scan line) in the frame. A television displays one field first, drawing alternating scan lines from the top of the image to the bottom (Figure 18.6).
