Choosing a Trimming Method

Making an adjustment to a clip’s in point or out point—particularly a small adjustment—is called trimming. You can trim a clip by manipulating it directly in the timeline or by working on it in trim mode in the Monitor window. Although you can use either method to perform some editing tasks, each has its unique features.

Trimming in the timeline relies on using the mouse to move the edges of a program’s clips, thereby changing their in or out points (Figure 7.1). By selecting various tools, you can perform specialized trimming tasks, known as ripple edits, rolling edits, or simple trimming.
