Insert and Overlay
The Monitor window controls include two methods for performing three- and four-point edits: insert and overlay. These methods determine how the new clip affects the clips that are already in the program.
An insert edit works much like adding a clip using film, inserting the new clip without removing material that is already in the program reel. When you insert a clip, the source clip is added at the designated point in the timeline, and all the subsequent clips are shifted later in time to make room for the new clip.
