Many colleges and universities offer a course called Precalculus, and there are many textbooks with that title, all of which tell the reader that the book is intended to prepare students for calculus. In order to understand why I wrote this book, and why I've added a subtitle—A Functional Approach to Graphing and Problem Solving—requires that we take a look at the reform issues that surround calculus as it is being taught today.
