Karl Smith has gained a reputation as a master teacher and guest lecturer. He has been a department chairperson, and is past president of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges. He has served on numerous boards, including the Conference Board of Mathematical Sciences (which serves as a liaison between the National Academy of Sciences, the federal government, and the mathematical community in the United States), the Council of Scientific Society Presidents, the Board of the California Mathematics Council for Community Colleges, and was invited to participate in the National Summit on Mathematics Education.
