About the Authors

Carla C. Kirkland is founder and CEO of The Kirkland Group, a consulting firm headquartered in Ridgeland, Mississippi, that has provided services to school districts for over 20 years. Mrs. Kirkland is a lifelong educator who has served as a teacher, curriculum specialist, educational consultant, and mentor. Providing professional development, technical assistance, and standardized test preparation to multiple school districts, Mrs. Kirkland speaks to the hearts of teachers and students throughout the country. She resides in Mississippi with her husband.

Chan Cleveland currently serves as executive vice president of The Kirkland Group. Mr. Cleveland has taught elementary, middle, and high-school English, and he has worked in several capacities at the Mississippi Department of Education. With over 16 years of experience as an educator, he has created, reviewed, and revised language arts standard documents for multiple school districts and education organizations across the southern region. Mr. Cleveland has assisted students and teachers with attaining positive results on the Praxis, ACT, and subject area assessments for grades K–12. He holds English degrees from Jackson State University and Mississippi College.
