North America is without doubt one of the freest and easiest places to carry out global journalism. The press began in Boston with the Boston Newsletter in 1704. This was followed by the Boston Gazette and the New England Courante. The modern American media probably has its roots in the New York Sun, the New York Herald, the New York Tribune and others. These became known as the penny press and the philosophy they adopted sounds remarkably modern: they believed that ordinary people should be given a realistic view of what was happening; that abuses should be exposed; their first duty was news and that local and human interest stories were what readers wanted most.
