There is a difference between engaging in organization development (OD) work as an internal professional versus working as an external consultant. Obviously, context, perceptions, influences, and so forth can be vastly different. The intent here is to examine what’s best for the internal OD professional. This chapter examines the advantages and disadvantages enjoyed by internal OD professionals, the keys to success as an internal OD practitioner, the relative advantages of “building” or “buying” change efforts, generating value-added, developing an internal brand, and building an internal talent bank.
