SUMMARY: A CAREER IN INTERNAL OD

Are you up to the considerable job here? You won’t make as much as successful external people (emphasis on “successful”), but you can have much more impact on a longer term. Will you be the “content” expert, the “process” expert, or both? The former must stay within an industry (or even function); the latter has somewhat of a free rein, since processes are transferable.
My observation, over two decades, is that you are best off internally if you love methodology, are comfortable with interventions requiring political finesse, and do not like to market or sell. Although marketing is required internally, as indicated above, it is far less severe than doing so on the basis of earning money as an external consultant. ...
