Complex adaptive systems cannot be predicted or controlled. Agents, their complex interactions, and the openness of the system create an unpredictable future for individual or collective patterns of behavior. To be effective in such an emergent ecology, HSD practitioners see what is happening in the self-organizing systems around them, understand the implications of those patterns, generate options for action, and take action to influence those patterns as they emerge.
