What’s in This for You?

We’re providing you with a functioning open source application that has been available on http://Vovida.org since March 2001. This code has been tested in our lab and in the labs of our community members all over the world. The Voice over IP community needs fresh ideas and new features. The ball is in your court.

The first thing that we suggest you do is go to our community web site , http://www.vovida.org, read through the site’s resources, and sign up for the mailing lists. These lists give you access to the developers, and even though they may not be able to offer individual support like a help desk, they can point you toward information that may help you achieve more success with your system.

Besides VOCAL, the Vovida site also offers the following open source protocol stacks , each with its own mailing list:

  • Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)

  • Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP)

  • Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP)

  • Common Open Policy Service (COPS)

  • Telephony Routing over IP (TRIP)

  • Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS)

  • Real-time Streaming Protocol (RTSP)

Before you load the software on your PC, you should also flip through this book to get a better idea about what the VOCAL system is all about. Then, when you’re ready, install VOCAL and start playing with it.
