Backing Up and Restoring the Operating System

Backing up and restoring the primary system disk drive is much more difficult than other disk drives on your system. The primary disk drive contains the root filesystem, where the UNIX operating system files reside. This drive has special codes stored near the beginning of the disk drive to allow UNIX to start running when you bring up the system after a shutdown. It contains the UNIX kernel, which resides on a special place on the primary disk drive so that it can be read into memory early in the bootup process to allow access to all the system devices.
