Saving Files on a DOS-Formatted Disk and Restoring Them

Many UNIX systems can save and restore files using a DOS-formatted floppy disk. However, remember that UNIX runs on many types of non-Intel computers, some that have no floppy disk drive.

Usually, special utilities are required for UNIX to access a DOS disk. Sometimes these are not part of the standard UNIX distribution and must be found and downloaded for your version of UNIX. Because of this, the commands and arguments may differ on various machines. Following are some example commands. Look for similar commands in the man pages on your machine.

To list the DOS directory on diskette, your UNIX system may support commands like these:

mdir a: or mdir /dev/fd0
dosdir a: or dosdir /dev/fd0 ...
