Introducing GUI and the X Window System

UNIX can run on inexpensive character-based ASCII terminals that are usually limited to 80 columns by 24 rows of text or limited graphic characters. UNIX can also utilize more expensive bitmapped monitors that can display pictures, images, and graphics and use a mouse to interact with the user. This second method of interaction is called a graphical user interface (GUI).

The Proper Name for X

The X Consortium requests that when referring to this software, you use the names X, X Window System, X Version 11, Version 11, or X11. X Window System is actually a trademark of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
