Pagers: One Screen at a Time

You are expected to know how to use the system pager utility. This is trickier than it sounds because you will encounter three different utilities on different types of UNIX and Linux systems:

  • pg

  • more

  • less

Some utilities, such as the man pages, will automatically invoke the default pager utility, and you cope with whatever pager you end up in. These pagers have many capabilities, such as jumping ahead a certain number of pages, going back a certain number of pages, going back to the start, skipping ahead to the end, and finding the next occurrence of a string. However these pagers do not use the same commands to do these functions.
