Security is an important issue in database management because information is a valuable commodity. Much of the data worth entrusting to a database management system needs to be protected from unauthorized use—that is, from being seen, changed, or removed by anyone not certified to do so.

If you're the sole user of a database, the security issue boils down to figuring out how to protect the database as a whole—a project not in the province of SQL. With a personal computer, for example, your main line of defense may be as low tech as a lock and key.
