SSL certificate

An SSL certificate is a digital public document that binds a cryptographic key to the details of an owner or organization such as through domain name, host name or location. This verifies that a legitimate company owns the website which is being accessed.

An SSL certificate has three specific functions:

  • Authentication
  • Verification
  • Data Encryption

In other words, the SSL certificate will have information about who has issued the certificate and to whom it is issued. This is not limited to web servers, it can also be used for end user machines, mobile phones and many more applications.
