Starting a PPP Connection

There are many ways to start a phone-line PPP connection. In this section, you learn how to start your Internet session using the minicom communications program, the ppp-on script, or kppp.

Starting a PPP Connection Using the minicom Program

The minicom communications program, found under the /usr/bin directory, can establish a PPP connection with your ISP. Although using this approach is not as convenient as using the ppp-on script, it is a good method to verify that your username, password, and PPP connection work with your ISP.

This approach works because you can quit minicom without hanging up and resetting your modem (not always a good idea, especially if making long-distance connections).
