Copying and Pasting Text

Copying and pasting text between terminal windows is a common X11 operation and involves using your mouse to select, drag, and then paste selected portions of text. Your keyboard can also play a part in these operations, especially for selecting large areas of text.

Copying and pasting text is handy for quickly copying complex command lines for later use in shell scripts, for duplicating text blocks or for moving chunks of text from a program's output in a terminal window into a text editor window.
