Adding a Tape Drive
Numerous tape drives are supported by Linux through the ftape and st tape modules. The ftape module is a device driver used to support floppy-controller tape drives or removable backup devices, whereas the st module supports SCSI tape devices. Both modules are automatically loaded and unloaded by the kmod system daemon when needed during tape operation.
Generally speaking, although nearly all SCSI and floppy-controller tape drives should work with modern Linux kernels, version 2.0 and up, many high-speed or parallel-port tapes might not.
