Adding Printers

If you did not set up a printer when you installed Linux, or if you want to add a different printer to your system, you can do so in at least two ways (both of which are discussed in this chapter):

  • Manually

  • By using the Red Hat Linux printtool command for the X Window System

Printers are described under Linux as character-mode devices. The most common of these devices are parallel-port printers and are listed under the /dev directory, with names similar to lp. Here's a sample listing of parallel-port printers:

# ls /dev/lp*
/dev/lp0 /dev/lp1 /dev/lp2

You should find at least three parallel printer devices listed under the /dev directory.
