What is Linux?
Linux is the kernel, or core, of a UNIX-like computer operating system. Linux, written by Linus Torvalds, was first released over the Internet in 1991. Since then, Linux has exploded in popularity, maturing with each new version and bug fix. When you install and use Linux, you're installing and using a distribution, or collection of associated programs bundled with the Linux kernel.
