When Clare W. Graves conducted his study of human nature, he did a supplemental study that looked at how groups solve problems if the members of the group assigned to solve the problem were also responsible for organizing themselves for the tasks involved (Cowan and Todorovic, 2005). Group sizes varied from 7 to 15. Researchers looked at how the group members organized themselves and handled the assignment of tasks, how they interacted, and the outcomes of the group’s behavior (whether they solved the problem).
