Digital configurations

You can also design your systems to take advantage of the digital representations of IoT devices that are stored in the cloud. Major CSPs offer digital twins, device shadows, and so on that can store IoT device configurations, usually as a configuration in a JSON file.

Cloud services interact with these digital representations of your device, so that even if the physical IoT device is powered off or offline, the digital representation of the device has been modified.

Upon reconnecting, physical devices synchronize with their digital selves, and change their states accordingly. Example services include AWS Thing Shadows, Azure Device Twins, and Watson Digital Twins.
